Sentenced Home

'Sentenced Home' puts a human face on the ongoing deportations of Cambodian Americans, following the heart-breaking sagas of three young men full-circle: from birth in Cambodia to an unwilling return decades later. Raised as Americans in inner-city Seattle, each made a rash decision as a teenager that irrevocably shaped his destiny. Now they find themselves caught between a tragic past and an uncertain future by a system that doesn't offer any second chances. 'Sentenced Home' reflects with them about their birth in the Killing Fields, their youth on America's mean streets, and their struggles in courtrooms and prisons, and follows them through their unwilling return to Cambodia decades later.

National PBS Premiere on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.

      Hear Stories About the Film

David Grabias and Nicole Newnham, Producers/Directors, 'Sentenced Home'

"For the young men with deportation orders whom we encountered, their biggest concern was separation from their family, culture and country -- the United States. 'I'm not Cambodian, I'm American,' we were repeatedly told, in Boston accents, Southern drawls and West Coast street slang. 'I don't remember anything about Cambodia.'"

      Loeun Lun, Deportee

"The day I came to get my citizenship, the officer told me I had an arrest warrant for a crime [I committed] in '95. I told him my crime happened eight years ago. I did my time. I obeyed the law ever since. He said it doesn't matter."

Patricia Vroom, Chief Counsel, Immigration and Customs Enforcement

"Certainly one can be looking at what are the root causes of somebody choosing a path of criminality. And one can look to the family, schools, the immediate community, you can look more broadly to society in general, the country, whatever. But the point is that, that's really not what the issue is here. The issue is that Congress has looked at what are the rules that people who have been given rights to live in this country must follow in order to get to stay here. And there's something of a quid pro quo. We're giving you something of tremendous value. And in exchange for that expect nothing more than that you live like everyone who got to live here for free. That's all. That's all we're asking for. And if you can't do that then we're going to have to take it away from you."

      Knocking

      'Knocking' Preview
They are moral conservatives who stay out of politics, but they won a record number of court cases expanding freedom for everyone. They refuse blood transfusions on religious grounds, but they embrace the science behind bloodless surgery. In Nazi Germany, they could fight for Hitler or go to the concentration camps. They chose the camps. Following two families who stand firm for their controversial and misunderstood Christian faith, 'Knocking' reveals how Jehovah's Witnesses have helped shape history beyond the doorstep.
