After coming home last week from Los Angeles, where I got to run this pretty awesome(if I don't say so myself) event, I posted this on my myspace, http://www.myspace.com/21stcenturyskip
L.A.R.P. UNITY
L.A.R.P. UNITY
FOR A STRONGER
L.A.R.P. COMUNITY
Our goal should always be inclusion not exclusion. There is so much cool stuff going on out there. Every realm a dream realized. Every game a new set of rules and abilities to explore. So much to learn from eachother, different weapon construction, creativity exploding all over, cool garb, amazing gear, interesting people.
Last weekend I had the honor of running a crossover event that included players from at least 4 different games. From full on rattan wielding knights to latex touch fighters and complete novices, with a simple rules set and a positive attitude we fought our battles from noon until sundown, fighting and feasting and fighting some more. An amazing expierience that will not fade fast from my memories, and a foundation to build on for the future of live action role playing, and how we as gamers and organizers interact. I will do my part and hope to run more open crossover events like this one.
So, its funny how the universe responds sometimes, I just got an e-mail from Tom at SEETHINK:
"We are encourging local LARP groups to do demo's before the first screening (or whenever they can) in front of the theater location. This will seriously help generate publicity for the film and the hobby. You can put my email as the contact and if a group wants to organize I will coordinate media coverage."
If you'd like to organize a larp event around a screening of Darkon in your area contact Tom Davis, the man with the mad planning skills, at liveactiondoc@seethink.com
We are trying to get local LARP groups to do demos before the first screening in each city we open in. The Amtgard demo (Alamo Drafthouse Austin,TX Monday JAN. 29 - DEMO: 6pm FILM: 7pm) is now confirmed and there is now a Dagorhir group in Tuscon, AZ that has taken it upon themselves to organize a demo directly with the owner of The Loft Cinema. The film opens Feb 2nd but the demo will be on Feb 4th.
Dagorhir advertisement:
"Get your fight on and witness a live armored battle competition, complete with period battle gear and costumes, in the Loft parking lot before the film, presented by the Tucson chapter of The Society of Creative Anachronism and Empire Chivalry and Steel!"
From the owner of The Loft Cinema:
"Also, we've just added a guest speaker to our event on Feb. 4th - Brian Wiese, who formed the "Dargorhir" group in Maryland in 1977, which was apparently the group that directly inspired the creation of the Darkon group in the film. People who know about such things claim that he is considered the "Grandfather of all LARP groups," so he should have some interesting insights into the movie. He now lives here in Tucson."
If anyone has contact info for a local larp group in Chicago, please pass it along.
Its amazing to see fighting breaking out all over the country for the theatrical release, in the wake of AOL True Stories' online release of Darkon The Movie.
Here's to a bloodless coup, fought with foam weapons,
