Brad Renfro Overlooked in Oscar Tribute

(Feb. 25) - Were you wondering where Brad Renfro's clips were in the 'In Memoriam' tribute during Sunday night's Oscars? You weren't alone.

Us Magazine talked to a representative of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences about why Renfro failed to make the cut. "It was really an editing decision because we can’t fit everyone in," says the rep. "There was no specific reason."

Tinseltown's
Recently Departed

Evelyn Keyes, July 4: She played Scarlett O'Hara's little sister in 'Gone With the Wind' and was married to entertainment legends Artie Shaw, King Vidor and John Huston. Keyes succumbed to uterine cancer at her home in Montecito, Calif. She was 91.

The dates covered in the tribute -- which included actors like Heath Ledger and Deborah Kerr mixed in with agents, cinematographers, choreographers and more -- ranged from last year up through the end of January 2008.

Those dates would explain why a recent death like Roy Schieder's wasn't covered. But Renfro passed away on January 15, weeks before the cutoff.

The once-promising thespian was found by his girlfriend in his home. No foul play was suspected in his death at the time.

But according to the cornoner's report released earlier this month, Renfro's cause of death was an "acute heroin/morphine intoxication."

"The final manner of death has been ruled an accident," the Los Angeles County Cororner confirmed on Friday.

Renfro rose to fame in 1994's "The Client," based on a John Grisham best-seller, where he played a youngster who witnesses a suicide and gets caught up in a mob investigation. Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the lawyer the boy hires to help protect him. Renfro followed up with major parts in the 1995 AIDS drama "The Cure," the 1997 "Sleepers," and "Telling Lies in America," also 1997. More recent credits included "Ghost World," 2001; "Deuces Wild," 2002; and "The Jacket," 2005.

But he was arrested numerous times over the past decade.

The actor served 10 days in jail in 2006 after pleading no contest to driving while intoxicated and guilty to attempted possession of heroin. The latter charge stemmed from his arrest in Los Angeles' Skid Row area, when he attempted to buy the drug from an undercover officer.

Other run-ins with the law included a 1998 charge of cocaine and marijuana possession, for which he avoided jail time in a plea deal. He was also placed on probation and ordered to pay $4,000 for repairs to a 45-foot yacht he and a friend tried to steal in Florida in 2000.

I think the oscars sucked this year. I thought it was terrible that they did not include Brad Renfro in the actors who passed. He was in a lot of movies, more that Heath Ledger. Who's to say about Ledger's drug abuse. With them finding a rolled up $20. was he snorting his presciption drugs......It seems like it depends on who your friends are in Hollywood and the money they use to cover things up.

Brad Renfro was omitted from the Oscar In Memoriam spot because, according to a representative of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, "we can't fit everyone in". I beg your pardon? Did Brad even ask to be "fitted in"? I think not. How dare you overlook someome who has transitioned to the other side as someone who has to be fitted in. This is not acceptable.
