Swank to Play Amelia Earhart in Biopic

(Feb. 8) - Hilary Swank has signed on to play famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart in the upcoming biopic "Amelia," Variety is reporting.

The film, which will be directed by Mira Nair ("The Namesake") and was penned by "Rain Man" scribe Ron Bass, is set to go before the lens in April.

With rumors swirling that the next two installments of the Spidey franchise will be shot back-to-back, the big question is: Will stars Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man/Peter Parker) and Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson) and director Sam Raimi be back?

Swank will portray Earhart during the formative stages of her career, beginning with her successful attempt to become the first woman to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928 and ending with her much-publicized and ill-fated attempt to fly around the globe in 1937. This venture ended with her disappearance -- and presumed death -- somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle.

Bass, who delivered his script just before the WGA strike hit, based the screenplay on Susan Butler's "East to the Dawn," Mary Lovell's "The Sound of the Wings" and Elgin Long's "Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved."

Swank came onboard the project late in 2007. Nair took over directorial duties when the strike derailed "Shantaram," which she was set to helm with Johnny Depp in the lead.

BUT THE AUTHOR OF THIS REALLY TAKES THE CAKE WITH THE LOCATION OF AMELIA'S DISAPPEARANCE. BERMUDA IS 700 MILES OFF THE COAST OF N. CAROLINA, IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. AMELIA DISAPPEARED OFF HOWLAND ISLAND IN THE PACIFIC, ABOUT HALF A WORLD AWAY. CAN WE GET SOME EDITORS AND FACT CHECKERS IN HERE?
