LOS ANGELES (June 1) - "Sex and the City," the long-awaited romantic comedy based on the HBO series of the same name, opened in the top spot at the box office in North America with better-than-expected weekend sales of $55.7 million, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said Sunday.

Coming to theaters four years after they ended their six-season run on the small screen, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and pals unleashed a frenzy among the show's fans, who organized "girls' nights out" to catch up with their heroines' exploits.

Going into the weekend, the Time Warner Inc-owned studio had expected the film to earn $25 million to $35 million for the three-day period.

The picture crushed "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which observers had assumed would whip up a second weekend in first place. Instead, the Paramount Pictures adventure was a distant No. 2 with $46.0 million; it has earned $216.9 million since opening May 22.

The Rogue Pictures horror film "The Strangers" kicked off at No. 3 with $20.7 million, also surpassing predictions.

Paramount is a unit of Viacom Inc. Rogue is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal.

Following are the top 10 films at the North American box office for the first three days of the weekend beginning May 30, led by the new release "Sex and the City," according to studio estimates compiled Sunday by Reuters.

It was absolutely the BEST movie ever...the powers that be did an awesome job with the story line, I would not change a single thang! I saw it for the first time Sun nite, then again 2nite..still have tears rolling down my face in laughter..a true feel good movie..the chick flick title is inappropriate by my male meter...real men can handle this flick..

I love sex and the city...I was totally addicted to the show and now a movie!! and for those of you who feel it's sending the wrong message to our teens...if your kid is going to base things they do in their life on what actors do on TV then you havent taught them anything and your daughter will probably be a ***** anyways. god forbid you show independant women who enjoy having fun and sex, that must make them bad people because theyre not soccer moms who are tied down and hate their lives. oh wait but isnt it ok anytime there's a show or movie about guys like that?? hmm I wonder why...

Report This! IMO if you have to live with a connection to a fantasy, then something is missing in real life.

*****************************
By contrast, a person who spends the day posting complaints about a movie he isn't even going to see has it all together.

Good day, everyone!

Good day. I have to do something when I am on conference calls all day!

I suppose you are not entertained by Star Wars, LOTR, Narnia, Harry Potter, Back to the Future, The Matrix... It seems to me there is more missing in the life of the uptight and judgmental than in the life of someone who enjoys a movie now and then.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I enjoy movies and I am entertained by those movies, I just don't fantasize about being one of the characters.

Maybe the uptight and judgemental do miss things in life, but folks who live in the here and now, can focus on the real life joys around them.

Good movie but do we really want to instill these morals on our teenage kids?
The sitcom was bad enough.

KEITHJHNS YOU ARE QUITE RIGHT

neesta85 03:29:46 PM Jun 02 2008

So you would want you daughter to have something in common with these women in someway as well?

*******************
I will want my daughters to recognize the humanity of people who are not like them.

Star Wars is an impossibility today, women can try and live like these women today. Big difference.

************************
I'm speaking for myself. Impossible.

Poor Matthew Broderick never smiles, he's just an arm for SJP. I enjoyed the movie as well but wished (without giving anythig away) the Big sequence of events didnt happen until late in the movie. I think Samantha had the best story line!
