NEW YORK (June 2) - Academy Award-winning actress Tatum O'Neal was released without bail on Monday, following her cocaine-possession arrest in downtown Manhattan the night before.

The Oscar-winning actress entered no plea as she was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. She is due back in court July 28.

Police found two bags of cocaine in O'Neal's pants pocket when she was arrested around 7:30 p.m. Sunday on the Lower East Side, according to a court complaint. Officers saw O'Neal accept the drug from a man during a routine drug sweep, police said.

According to a New York Post source, O'Neal told police that the drug buy was for work. "I'm researching a part - I'm doing this for a part as a junkie," she allegedly said.

O'Neal appears regularly on the cable television series "Rescue Me" and was the youngest person to win an Oscar for her role in 1973's "Paper Moon." She has publicly battled drug addiction in the past, and chronicled her struggles in her 2005 memoir, "A Paper Life." O'Neal has since said she is sober.

I've read Tatum Oneal's book and she really had a very harsh upbringing. I truly feel sorry for her. She was treated horribly by adults and as a result she is in trouble in her adult life. There but for the grace of God go I. I think she is talented and gorgeous and I wish her the very best.

Ryan was and is basically a borderline type personality, all his kids, even Redmond, Farrah's, have been so as well. Tatum is too, and picked up any acting techniques from the Hollywood type dysfunctional adults she was around growing up due to Dad's success. The whole clan has traded in their 15 minutes for an 8 ball and 40 dollars worth of late night Sonic burgers. It musta been a slow news day.

I just don`t get how people are stupid enough to even try crack once knowing how addictive and bad it is for you. How many stories do people have to hear about people losing everything to that addiction. For someone with her damn money she should be high on life. The traveling and everything else she can do it makes no sense to find something to try and make her feel better. Everyone knows it doesn`t do that anyways, just makes you feel like crap. Then for someone of her stature, money, and looks should not be buying crack in the hood. Has she totally lost her mind? Crack dealer will grab her ass, **** her, and make her pay him a ******** of money. Crackheads have no fricking brains!

This has happened to her so many times, if she is found guilty, I think she should get PRISON TIME. The ones I feel sorry for are her children. They must be so humiliated to have a mom like this. Rehab obviously hasn't helped for her. Wake up, Tatum.

It is really very sad to see anyone become addicted, to any drug. But for some with so much( wealth, talent, beautiful children, educatation, lineage, etc.) it is especially disheartening. She is a MOTHER and that should be incentive enough to stay clean. To put her life at risk by associating with known dealers and going to seedy parts of town, at night, is heartbreaking. She has all the money she needs to enroll in a top-notch rehab. I know that it must be a difficult road to sobriety, but why must the children pay the price? What would happen to them, emotionally, if she were to be murdrered, on one of her late night excursions/drug transactions. Their emotional scarring would be beyond repair. Very sad, heartbreaking. Why don't the priveledged appreciate all of thier good fortune. What would they do if they truly had to struggle, at life, finances, child rearing, mortgage payments, education, etc. Would they overdose to escape? It gets really tiresome to read about the daily "so-ca
