'Transformers' Blog Beat

Is this Michael Bay's best film ever ... or his worst? Don't take our word for it: See what the fans had to say on Cinematical, then tell us what you think.
More About the Movie

"Okay, first of all, Michael Bay is one of the greatest action visionaries of our time. After I saw this movie, I walked out with my mouth opened wide. My adrenaline was pumping, my imagination was sparked, and I couldn't get over how drop-dead gorgeous Megan Fox was in this movie. People who didn't like this movie just lost the child inside of them. This movie is the best 'fun' movie of the summer."

"Just came back from seeing the movie. My body and my head hurt. This movie definitely comes FULLY LOADED. For those who were looking for a carbon copy of the 80s story, sorry but no dice. Rather it combines the 80s story with a here and now twist. You don't have to be a fan to watch the movie either. I think if it was only written for purists like myself, not a whole lot of people would watch and or understand it. It's a fun and exciting movie for ANYONE, fan or not. "

"This movie sucked! Plain and simple. I love to analyze movies and try not to hate. I actually went to this one with that mantra stated above, 'Must not think.' But it didn't matter. All of the stupid one liners, the out of character Autobots, and just scene after scene just put together without rhyme or reason just to show scenes. Not one complete storyline and not thought about or through at all. What I wanted to see was what we remember from our childhood and that is simply Autobots vs. Decepticons. Not army guys vs. Decepticons, and surely not army guys vs. Autobots."

"I did indeed grow up on Transformers, so yes there was a very high bar to hit. And hit it Bay and Spielberg did. I thoroughly enjoyed the way they managed to capture the same sort of campy humor that prevailed in the original cartoon series. The action sequences were phenomenal and the presence that Prime brought to the big screen made me giddy. I have already purchased my tickets for a second showing today."

"I didn't think anything could go wrong with this movie. But... it did. I was expecting an edge of your seat, is the world coming to an end movie. Instead I got a bunch of robots hanging out in the front yard. Loved the action scenes. Hated the comedy, I didn't come for that. I wanted to feel we needed to be saved. That didn't happen. No emotional contact AT ALL. I am so sick of directors and writers trying to make all action movies comedies."

"Simply put, this movie is AWESOME! It works because Michael Bay gets us to actually CARE about the Autobots and their mission to save the Earth. You can't but help to actually root for them as if they truly exist. I sat in a packed house tonight and everyone in the theatre actually cheered throughout the entire fim. It was spectacular. See the film. You won't be disappointed. People, it's MINDLESS fun. Lighten up. The key word: FUN!!!"

"To any guy (and maybe even some girls) who simply remember Transformers from their childhood, or like me had a collection large enough to make your own miniature movie set piece, this film delivers on 99% of your expectations about what a live action Transformers movie should by like. Come on folks! How serious a plot does a movie about giant robots based on a kids toy need to be. Even though some of the plot threads to end up hanging a little at the end, this is still by far the best and most well done action movie this summer. It's also easily Michael Bay's best movie so far, and should go down in history as an action classic."

"Look. The first half of the movie was alright. When the bad acting of the sector 7 agent kicked in along with the Hoover dam crap it fell apart. Some of the cgi was blurry which meant it was not completed. I think the writers did a horrible job balancing everything out at the end. Overall I give this movie a C-. I love Transformers, don't get me wrong, but Michael Bay got to a point in editing the movie that he just stopped caring. Seeing Transformers finally in a live action movie is great... seeing them in a Michael Bay movie, well... where was James Cameron when you need him?"

"It was a lot of great, amusing, heart pumping, wicked bad ass fighting in the streets. Who wouldn't wanna see two big huge robots fight? The graphics were mouth dropping, the plot kept digging deeper until the shocking truth about Sam's grandfather. Which was absolutely awesome. The movie was soooooo great I'd see it 5 more times, even at a ridiculus $9.75 ticket price. And this is from a girl who'd never even seen Transformers growing up."

"I grew up with all the Transformers trappings but after seeing this film and how much for all the BS that was fed us about how they were answerable to the fans and would do the franchise right, it sucked. The robots weren't actors, they were more along the lines of props or story vehicles (pardon the pun). In case Mr. Bay and the writers didn't realize, the name of the movie IS 'The Transformers' not 'Sam Gets the Chick and Saves the World.' I hope that the sequel really takes our opinions and feedback to heart, because I feel if done right, it could have been a real Summer Blockbuster."

"I grew up on the original series and had I wanted to see that, I would have rented it. This is a new movie... get over it. I was upset that they didn't use the original Megatron voice but you know what? I got over it. The movie was hands down the best movie I have seen in years. It was a movie for people who love movies. I went looking to have a good time for 2.5 hours and I certainly did."

"There are a lot of legitimate criticisms to this movie, and yet, I can't help but think this was really the best we could hope for. It's a movie based on a cartoon/comic that was made specifically to sell toys. What more did you expect? I, for one, loved every minute of it. Here's hoping for a sequel. . . one that focuses its attention where it should be: The Transformers."

"This 50 year old woman laughed out loud, felt sad at times, was engrossed in the story, amazed at the special effects and ultimately was completely entertained. Isn't that the whole point of a movie -- to be entertained? My entire family enjoyed it and we have already made plans to see it again tomorrow night!! And yes, I already have plans to purchase Transformers for my young great-nephews. Who knows, I may just keep one for myself!"

"Of course Transformers played to the fans. What else do you want them to do? If they just wanted to make a giant robot movie they could have done so without licensing Transformers. It's a movie by fans, for fans, but one that can be enjoyed for the popcorn action elements alone even if you grew up without Transformers. Bottom line: Not every film is going to be Magnolia or American Beauty -- thank God. Pass the popcorn and keep it down, or go back to watching your soap operas. I'm trying to watch the big one with blue stripes beat the crap out of the one that looks like a tank."

"It was easily one of the best summer blockbusters I've ever seen. It's nerd porn. Get over it. Kids will love it, and so will kids-at-heart. I hope your kids (if you happen to have any) drag you to it again and again because it's FUN TO WATCH. Shia LeBeouf is a genuine talent, someone who will, one day, be a great, great actor without being a stupid teenager who is more famous for their personality than their performances. Is it Citizen Kane? No. Is it better than anything else on release right now? You better believe it. "

"I need to be clear about something. I love the original TRANSFORMERS movie, cheese and all. But I'm not a chapter and verse Transformer guy. What I am though, is a Giant Robot Geek - and this sequence with BLACKOUT... is Giant Robot Geekgasm material. The sounds its energy weapons make are so awesome as to make the hairs on your legs tremble with their sub-bass sonics. It's killer."

"Just some brief feedback from a reader who saw screener footage of Transformers at ShoWest: "Just saw the ShoWest screener footage of Transformers at the studio. The movie is going to be a license to print money. The animation is Awesome. Probably Bay's biggest movie ever. Lots of blowing up, tossed tanks, and other fun stuff. The girl looks like a younger hotter version of Jennifer Connelly. Optimus in Peter Cullen's voice - "My Bad" ... Classic. Scorponok has amazing animation.' Cool."

"Bert was kind enough to send this along to me. It comes from the Sector Seven website. Behold the voice of Starscream in the upcoming Transformers movie. My thoughts? This may surprise you... but I don't like it. Yes, it sounds a bit like the 80's cartoon version a little bit... but that's the problem for me... it sounds a little too cartoony. Oh well, I'll wait to see how it plays with full video action going at the same time."

"For all those don't like Michael Bay out there, I think it might be time to put away the Haterade. Two new TRANSFORMERS TV spots were just released, and they bode well for the future of the film. I'm not one to usually be impressed by special effects these days, as I feel as though I've seen it all, and that Hollywood is over-saturated with effects extravaganzas. But this looks different, as the 'transforming' effects truly do look awesome. The marketing for this movie has been clever so far, as we haven't gotten any clear, full shots of the robots in action. I wonder if that will change, but consider my appetite soaking whet."

"A couple weeks back we posted a Transformers television advertisement which showed Optimus Prime talking. The internet was mortified - Prime looked stupid. Transformers don't have mouths. It was a big blow to the fanboy community ... Finally director Michael Bay has decided to respond to the fanboy disappointment: 'The unreleased ad (Prime speaks) that was posted on youtube was a test that European were making with the ads. The clip where OP was "speaking," let's just say that it wasn't OP or Cullen speaking. It was something the European studios added on their own. In fact, it was a test shot.' But can we really believe this? The clip looked legit to me. And if true, why didn't someone at DreamWorks address this sooner? The huge damage is already done."

"Optimus Prime has lips?! WTF? That's it -- Bay officially may have just ruined the movie for me. I'm going to go cry in my corner now and remember back when I was a kid before I accidentally crushed my Optimus Prime toy with a rock. Ooh, I know, maybe I'll spend some time looking through other, non-lip pictures from earlier posts."

"Whether you last saw an episode of 'The Transformers' after elementary school or on DVD last week, there's probably still a lot of stuff you don't know about both the big-budget, live-action film hitting July 4 and the Transformers in general. Well, get a pen and some paper, because we're about to give you a crash course on the ABCs of the Transformers! ... Nightbird: How could they possibly make the 'Transformers' movie cooler? Three words: Female ninja robots. Nightbird, introduced in the 'Transformers' episode 'Enter the Nightbird,' was built by a Japanese scientist for 'research purposes.' (Yeah, right.)"

"Why did ['Transformers'] get an initial R-rating? According to Shia LaBeouf ... 'We went to get our MPAA rating, and this movie is for the masses, and we got an R rating because of the tension, not because of the curse words or nudity, but for sheer intensity. It's aneurysm-inducing.' ... I can't wait to see all the parents who will be bringing their four year olds to this because 'it's a movie about toys.' Between the description above, the soda and candy that they'll buy, the kids will no doubt need some Ritalin to calm them down afterwards."

"As I've said time and time again, I'm a huge Michael Bay fan and think he's an artist in every sense of the word. In fact if I could've offered Transformers to anyone I would've picked him. He makes movies like no one else. And the thing that I also love is when he gets 200 million to blow s**t up, all 200 million is up on the screen. Sometimes you hear a budget was 100 million but the film looks like 50. Not Michael Bay. That's why Transformers is going to be so good. With the huge budget that was spent and the advances in CGI, I think the film is going to shock everyone."

"The good folk over at Collider scored an interview with Indy Jr. himself, Mr. Shia LaBeouf, and within it he dropped a few hints about running time of Michael Bay's robot blockbuster and just how friggin' action packed this robo-beast of movie is going to be. LaBeouf says: 'It's going to be long. He's going to give you a lot ... You can't just have robots fighting for no reason. You've got to explain it. The movies going to run, I think, about two and a half." Obviously, LaBeouf has never seen Bad Boys II, because Bay certainly doesn't try to explain anything in that film, but nonetheless this, coupled with the fantastic fight shots Filmwad dropped right here today, has me frothing at the mouth. This is probably the film I'm most anticipating right now, not only because of my geekish love of the original Transformer toys, but because anything Michael Bay does (though it may be corny and overly patriotic) is always a step higher in the action department than anything else. Michael Bay + fighting robots = one great big 'o' face."

"I'm trying a new thing here and being optimistic about upcoming comic book/sci-fi films instead of displaying my usual pessimism that most of them will, sadly, suck pretty hard -- especially ones directed by anyone with the name Bay, Schumacher, Johnson or Pitof ... In truth, after seeing the trailers and looking at the pics -- Optimus Prime looks great -- its pretty hard to maintain my usual skepticism, at least about this particular movie -- rather lame fan interview video notwithstanding. In spite of my reservations, the movie looks pretty damn cool and I will no doubt be one of the teeming masses heading out to watch it on opening day."
