Berry, Del Toro get 'Lost'
05/07/06Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro will team in "Things We Lost in the Fire" for DreamWorks. Danish helmer Susanne Bier is directing from a script by Allan Loeb. Sam Mendes is producing along with Sam Mercer. Pic tells the story of a woman (Berry) whose husband suddenly dies. She invites her husband's troubled best friend (Del Toro) to live with her family, and as the friend turns his life around, he helps the grief-stricken family confront their loss.
DreamWorks lights 'Fire'
07/07/05DreamWorks swooped in and bought the spec script "Things We Lost in the Fire" by Allan Loeb for Sam Mendes to produce. The script went out over the July 4th weekend and caused a stir, but the deal was sealed - in large part due to the appeal of Mendes, who has a production shingle at DreamWorks - before most other majors could get in on the bidding. In the film, after a woman's husband dies suddenly, leaving her alone with two children, she invites her husband's troubled best friend to live with them. As the friend turns his life around, he helps the fractured family confront the emotional void left by the loss.
