Gere is terrific at suggesting the kind of addictive cocktail of excitement, panic, chutzpah, creativity, and naked hunger for fame and megabucks that might inspire such big, fat lies.

Read the full reviewGere gives 'em the old razzle-dazzle with his roguish charm and sharp comic timing. The surprise is the unexpected feeling he brings to this challenging role.
Read the full reviewIt's an accomplished potboiler entertainment, as calculated and clever as the stories Irving spins to stay afloat in the growing sea of his own lies.
Read the full reviewThe result is an unexpectedly satisfying fantasia of reality and imagination, a meditation on the nature of lies and deception, on how we come to embrace not the truth but what it suits us to believe.
Read the full reviewLasse Hallstrom's breezy, fast-paced, somewhat loose-ended account of how he (Irving) did it offers a surprisingly layered vehicle for a maniacally conniving Richard Gere, backed up by a superb Alfred Molina as his accomplice.
Read the full reviewIt is for the most part a jumpy, suspenseful caper, full of narrow escapes, improbable reversals and complicated intrigue. But it has a sinister, shadowy undertow, an intimation of dread that lingers after Irving's game is up.
Read the full reviewEntertaining and piquant. The film does possess some of the bittersweet qualities that usually mark Hallstrom's films, but it's generally a tougher, more incisive work that ranks as one of his best.
Read the full reviewThe only thing missing from The Hoax might be a couple of songs. It's that breezy and fleet a movie.
Read the full reviewA personal story with broad implications for the culture as a whole.
Read the full reviewAs a movie, The Hoax isn't a fraud but it's not the real deal, either.
Read the full reviewEven though we're caught up in his derring-do as he beguiles entire meeting rooms of jaded publishers and editors, we're kept at a dissatisfying distance from Irving and the movie.

Slow going
"An insider's movie, one which can be best appreciated by professional writers. That would explain the overly enthusiastic ratings which the critics have given this minor story. Maybe I'll be in the minority here but, even though I'm old enough to remember when Clifford Irving was news, this rendition of those events didn't do much for me. A couple of chuckles, that's about it."
Entertaining
"I didn't remember this event occuring during the 70's so I enjoyed learning more about Howard Hughes and about this author. I liked the movie but I don't think young people will find it a good pick. I found it incredible that someone could almost pull off a hoax of this magnitude. Not one of Richard Gere's best movies but a worthwhile effort."
Very interesting and fun!
"Gere is as great as the plot and that it is based on a true story makes it more fascinating. And the deeper implications make it even more fasincating. Fun, interesting and very worth seeing."
