San Francisco Chronicle | Mick LaSalle

From the outside, Sunshine sounds like the most boring film on Earth. In fact, it's glorious.

It's a brilliant, profound movie, but it's almost no fun at all.

If their movie doesn't float your boat as a work of science-fiction, action, philosophy, heliocentrism, or staggering visual spectacle (although, it really should), then it certainly succeeds as a parable for cinematic ambition.

In moments--the early moments--Sunshine can feel like a new genre classic, albeit one heavily in debt to its predecessors.

Beam yourselves aboard Sunshine, set 50 years in the future. The voyage works, beautifully.

Sunshine is its own creature, taking inspiration from classic science fiction films but insisting on a gritty reality that much improves on past space adventures.

A first-rate, seemingly sweat-free entertainer, Mr. Boyle always sells the goods smoothly, along with the chills, the laughs and, somewhat less often, the tears. He?s wickedly good at making you jump and squirm in your seat, which he does often in Sunshine, but he tends to avoid tapping into deep wells of emotion.

Hard-core science fiction fans will likely greet Sunshine with a smile. Others may find this to be an odd motion picture, but there's enough going on that even those who are expecting something flashier should still be engaged.

This movie doesn't make you think you are watching art. It's closer to a high-end TV movie with lots of familiar faces.

This is a movie of substance and thrilling historical sweep, and its three hours allow Szabo to show the family's destiny forming and shifting under pressure.

For though it can't maintain its momentum all the way to the end, Sunshine until it stumbles is gratifyingly far from the usual space-opera stuff.

It is a superb period re-creation and boasts a formidable international cast.... It is nevertheless absorbing and illuminating in regard to the eras its spans but is also pretty wearying by the time it starts winding down.

Movie sound boring.

"My friend said this is a good movie. He let me borrowed the dvd, didn't watch it yet though. I probably won't even waste my time with this utter garbage."

Now this is realisitc Sci-Fi

"Put together an incompitent crew to save humanity from an implusable threat with an even more impluasable solution not based on any known science... and if it doesnt work the first time, ignore all the obvious faults, don't change anything, and just keep trying until it does. Sounds like the kind of mission the government would come up with (and has before) This movie nailed it right on. =)"

An epic.......... nothing more needs to be said

"Not many movies make me feel grateful to be alive and grateful for everything i have, small or large. "Sunshine", for me, put our world into context and taught a very meaningful leason of self-sacrifice and morality. The movie itself was inspiring and it fullfilled every expectation of a modern sci-fi film that i have come to respect. Every Scene is a masterpiece, and every shot is a photo into the future. I liked the idea of a space villian/zombie character. Much like the Twisted villian from the film "Event Horizon". The charracter was a perfect blend of Religious Zeolot/Zombie/"seen the other side"phycopath. Anyway, I will never look up toward the sun in the same way ever again, now if it would just get sunny around here... Great work cast and crew of "Sunshine"."

Learn To Spell!!

"To certain members posting here(you know who you are): please learn to spell the language you are trying to speak! Go back to school, get a dictionary, or use "spelcheck". And while you're at it, learn correct punctuation and grammar. Reading your comments can be painful. One would think you are all six year old children! Get with it!"

When it shines, it shines brightly

"Very well paced--- a yawn at first, has that 2001 feel, then there is the predictable space walk--where we know whowill return and who will not, but hang in there----the final thirdfeels like a suspense cliff hanger of which we do not know theoutcome."

Great Movie Killed by a Zombie (spoiler alert)

"I really enjoyed 28 Days Later, and I was looking forward to a intense, interesting story here, but frankly I didn't expect this director's signature dance move to be the Zombie Tango. All the way up to the rendezvous, this was a really good story, with very talented actors/actresses.The subplots were very interesting as well. However, the introduction of the "bad guy/gal" jumped the shark like an Olympian. How did this guy survive? How did he get on their ship? And why can't the camera focus on who/what he is?It's like Danny Boyle was unsatisfied with his brilliant story and was jones-ing for some "Plan 9 From Outer Space" aspect to this movie.TOTALLY UNNECESSARY, DANNY!!Luckily, the phenomenal acting and other great subplots made this an interesting story, BUT stop with the MONSTER storylines that are totally disconnected from the flow of the plot. Frankly, it's wasted talent and a waste of a unique story."

"Sunshine" Shines Very Brightly

""Sunshine" is not so much a story of science fiction, but a human drama set in a science fiction setting. I can't remember anyone ever making a movie where the sun could be almost considered a character. There are some "holes" in the science aspect of this movie, but no more so than almost any other science fiction movie that has ever been made, the exceptions being "The Andromeda Strain" and "2001: A Space Odyssey". The strength of the story lies with it's characters and how they come to terms with the mission that they have been tasked and how they handle events when things don't go as planned. They show us the worst, the strangest, and the best in humanity when people are pushed to their mental and emotional limits in desperate and dire circumstances. This movie puts these circumstances out in front of us and MAKES us look, makes us wonder what we would in the same situations. As well as being thought provoking, "Sunshine" is very well filmed and well paced from start to finish. I would recommend seeing this in a theater instead of waiting for the DVD; I think the scope and impact of the film could be lost on a smaller screen. If you want something that looks awe-inspiring AND makes you think, then "Sunshine" is a must see."

It is one of those movies that stays with me and keeps me thinking.

"I get the feeling that the script was written by a hippie. I was let down by plot which is a load of rot. Strange though, I was not let down by the movie. I felt as if I was flying close to the sun, I felt it's impossible heat, it's deafing roar. (Scientist are saying now that it does roar, like a million canons going off at the same time) I was impressed by Cillian Murphy's performance in this. He was cast against type. He looks like a brilliant, beautiful madman and he has indeed played them. In this his character is brilliant, beautiful and coldly sane. If the character is mad at all it is the madness that the human race comes down with from time to time when it trys to accomplish a thing against the odds. There is an international cast and I loved it, may it be the wave of the future. Probably done because it makes a lot of economic sense."
