ReelViews | James Berardinelli

What a horror film SHOULD be - dark, tense, and punctuated by just enough gore to keep the viewer's flinch reflex intact.

What is surprising is how he (Darabont) rebounds from his weak, awkwardly compressed opening to produce one of the scariest King films since Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining."

There's a grim modern parable to be read into the dangerous effects of the gospel-preaching local crazy lady Mrs. Carmody (brilliantly played by a hellfire Marcia Gay Harden) on a congregation of the fearful.

While it's riveting throughout, The Mist is a bit bloated.

More thought-provoking than frightening. Its stubbornly cynical attitude makes it worth watching, more than the monsters or the impenetrable mist (which looks spewed from a fog machine) engulfing a small town in Maine.

More political allegory than horror movie.

Less horrific than it is horribly didactic.

The Mist doesn't provoke further thought; it provokes active annoyance at being punished in the service of a pulp morality tale with pretensions.

Until the director Frank Darabont decides that he?s saying something important instead of making a nifty horror movie, The Mist isn?t half bad.

Much nastier and less genteel than his best-known Stephen King adaptations ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile"), Frank Darabont's screw-loose doomsday thriller works better as a gross-out B-movie than as a psychological portrait of mankind under siege, marred by one-note characterizations and a tone that veers wildly between snarky and hysterical.

If you have seen ads or trailers suggesting that horrible things pounce on people, and they make you think you want to see this movie, you will be correct. It is a competently made Horrible Things Pouncing on People Movie. If you think Frank Darabont has equaled the "Shawshank" and "Green Mile" track record, you will be sadly mistaken.

"it would be too scary for the little boy to be in this movie.i left the movie after the first 30 minutes.it was too gross to stay."

You call that scary

"I did not find this film scary at all. I did not mind the religous aspects to the film but also felt like it was a cop-out. What would have been really interesting is to see how far the film went with the human sacrifice/religous extremist plot. Going more into the end of days and relevation. However, this was not done because of another cop-out of the killing of the religious fanatic.I did not feel anything for these chracters because they were so under developed. The first hour or so was pretty darn interesting from a plot point of view. The second hour got worse by the minute until the horrible ending. What was that anyway? If you are going to end the movie with gunshots and death then the main character should of been killed by one of the cheesy special effects monsters. Yes, have the monsters win at the end. The film was made in 2007 and lacks any orginality in its scares. I was also turned off by the blatant ripoffs from my all time favorite horror film "Alien". I have seen worse horror films. Do not make political and religious commentary and then fail to follow thru because they are scared of what the film might then represent. Ahhh...man turning against man at the gravest events with religion at center stage.1 and 1/2 stars..."

American Culture

"If you are one of those who leans towards more academic films like Renoir, Cocteau, Hitchcock, or if you were able to really appreciate "Death At A Funeral," you may have gotten the underlying commentary in "The Mist." King's latest movie was a very sad, hopeless commentary on present American culture and society. Listen to the movie rather than watching the movie. Those making this film were obviously more intent on making a sociopolitical commentary rather than a cinematic masterpiece."

HORRIBLE!!!

"First, The ending was the worst ending I've ever seen in a movie. And, Who in the right mind would kill their own child. Anyone who has a child...knows they would never do anything like that. This movie was so bad I signed up up on here...just to write a review. Who ever says it is good...is sick in the HEAD!!! I would never ever recommend this movie to anyone. Plus, Half the monsters looked super fake.....they could have done more with special effects."

A

"Just saw this movie on DVD.This movie was so suspensful, tense shocking and have my nerves all messed up. I would definately recommend this movie. I don't know what movie those others were watching who said it wasn't good but trust me, you won't be dissapointed. Also, some dumb idiot mentioned that they couldnt recommend it because of the ending? Not all good movies have a happy ending. Real life doesn't have a happy ending for everyone either. Thats um, just life. It made the movie even better and more real. Anyways, enjoy."

Are you Kidding me

"This was the worst movie i have ever seen. I would rather pull off my skin with a potato peeler layer by layer and then sit in a tub of rubbing alcohol then ever sit throw this movie again. How many stupid sh**s can be in one place, whats the population of Maine theres your answer. Steven King should be ashamed that he had anything to do with the creation of this picture and making folks from Maine look so f-ing stupid. Thank you for reading."

"As a major fan of horror movies and stephen king, i found myself rooting for the monsters. 4 of us started watching it and by the time the movie ended, there were only 2 of us left. The other one that stayed in the room correctly predicted then ending. waste of time."
