Critic Reviews

The New York Times | Manohla Dargis

The film is not a beautiful object or a memorable cultural one, and yet it charms, however awkwardly. Ms. Swank?s ardent sincerity and naked emotionalism dovetail nicely with Mr. LaGravenese?s melodramatic excesses.

This misguided chick flick jumps through a lot of hoops just to state the obvious: "Life goes on, enjoy the time you have."

Aside from the inept "August Rush," there probably isn't a more clumsily manipulative motion picture out there this holiday season than P.S. I Love You.

If P.S. I Love You proves anything, it's that Hilary Swank may be a great actress, but she can't do cute.

The Hollywood Reporter | Kirk Honeycutt

The film, written (with Steven Rogers) and directed by Richard LaGravenese, is long and drags in places. But the chief problem is that "P.S." feels like a gimmick.

The Onion (A.V. Club) | Scott Tobias

Working from a novel by Cecelia Ahern, LaGravenese brings some intelligence and maturity to a genre that sorely needs it, but it isn't enough to prop up this long-winded and thoroughly bland romantic comedy.

"Ghost" with a brogue, "The Notebook" without the burden of old people, this post-life comedy will have the sentimentally challenged weeping openly, while clutching desperately to the pants-legs of boyfriends and husbands who are trying to flee up the aisle.

Blithely inept.

FYI, there's zero chemistry between P.S. I Love You's two commodified headliners. P.S.: The plus in the harsh grade goes solely to the divine Lisa Kudrow, delivering desperately needed laughs as the twitchy widow's husband-hunting best friend.

You could go see P.S. I Love You, or you could hit yourself on the head with a meat mallet -- it depends on the amount of time and money you want to devote to what amounts to roughly the same experience.

Bewitching

P.S. I loved the movie

"P.S. I love you is one of the good romantic comedies I've seen in a very long time. Hilary Swank delivered such charming, yet compelled performances, she really made the role of Holly so convincing as a griefing widow who goes through these letters that gave her so much hope in the end to live continueously. Gerald Butler is charming, yet funny, and suave, And Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also charming and Harry Conneck Jr also was charming too. PS I loved the movie for its heart, and warmth feeling while watching this film. From start to ********** was entertaining."

"What can I say! This movie took me by surprise. At first I thought another romantic comedy.I had no idea what I was in store for with movie.First, Gerard Butler is so likeable in this movie its unbelievable.Secondly, Hilary Swank was extremely believable.I cried like a baby.I felt myself being totally consumed with the message it was sending. It has been a long time since a movie has touched me like that.Watch it !!!!!!!!!!!!"

The critics must either be all men or have hearts of stone.

"This is by far one of the best love stories I have ever encountered. MY friends and I went to see it together and I had extreme difficulty fighting the streams of tears coming from my eyes. I thought the casting was wonderful and it was truly an original idea. Its not about the initial idea of getting over a loved one, its about journeying and struggling with the main character (swank) through the process of doing so. I loved it and I can't wait to buy it when it comes out on video."

Once again...

".... the critics have nothing in common with the movie-going public. This movie was fantastic! There was great chemistry on-screen between Gerry and Holly. The singing was great! It was a FUN movie!!! Can't wait for the DVD to come out... Just wish the soundtrack had more of the actual songs from the movie!"

A LIFE WELL LIVED

"THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT MOVIE, WITH SENTIMENTS ONE COULD ONLY DREAM OF EXPERIENCING. LOVE OF LOVES. I WAS DEEPLY TOUCHED. ONE MAN CONTINUES TO LOVE, PROTECT, CARE FOR HIS GREAT LOVE EVEN THRU HIS UNBEARABLE NIGHTMARE. A TRUE LOVE INDEED. THE ACTORS WERE SO ..... BELIEVABLE, I CANNOT BEGIN TO FIND THE WORDS TO DISCRIBE THEIR PERFORMANCES. CHEMISTRY SEEMED SO REAL. I TRUE HONOR TO WATCH. 1000.... ."

Love It!!!

"I absolutely loved this movie. Even though it was very different from the book, I still highly enjoyed it. Just to warn you, bring a lot of tissues because you will be crying your eyes out!"
