Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest News
Will's wheels fill tills
08/06/06Will Ferrell's star power got a major boost this weekend as he lapped the competition with "Talladega Nights," which grossed a bigger-than-expected $47 million. Pic is the best comedy bow of the year and the No. 2 original comedy opening of all time, behind only "Bruce Almighty." While none of the other three wide openers -- "Barnyard," "The Descent" and "The Night Listener" -- got past the midteens, and last week's top pic, "Miami Vice," fell 60%-plus, "Talladega Nights" helped rev the weekend up to a sizable 22% advantage over the same frame a year ago.
'Vice' gets a grip on still-strong 'Pirates'
07/30/06"Pirates" finally ceded the No. 1 spot at the box office as "Miami Vice" sped to the front with an on-target $25.2 million bow. "John Tucker Must Die" also opened solidly, scoring big with teenage girls as it took in $14.1 million. "The Ant Bully" got pushed around by the competition, however, opening to a weak $8.1 million and contributing to a tough frame for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures as their "Lady in the Water" took a big drop after a soft opening.
Pirates prey on 'Monster,' 'Lady'
07/23/06The smooth sailing continues for Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." Pic dominated four new entries and easily won the weekend box office with $35 million at 4,133 playdates. What had been expected to be a tight race for second place turned into an easy victory for Sony's family toon "Monster House," which boasted a solid $23 million at 3,553 engagements.
Will Night fall at B.O.?
07/20/06This weekend promises to be a particularly tight one at the box office as four new films open and a fifth, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," will still be in the hunt for No. 1. Warner Bros.' "Lady in the Water," Sony's "Monster House," Fox's "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and the Weinstein Co. and MGM's "Clerks II" all hit theaters this weekend, with the first two expected to compete with "Pirates" for the No. 1 spot in the 20s or low 30s.
'Pirates' continues to cruise
07/16/06"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" continued its record-setting assault on the box office, scoring the biggest ever 10-day gross as its cume hit $258.2 million. Pic declined 54% in its second frame -- typical after a huge bow --but still grossed an impressive $62.2 million, to retain the top spot at the B.O. Repping one of the few records it hasn't broken, weekend take was "only" the third-biggest second weekend ever, behind "Shrek 2's" $72.1 million in 2004 and "Spider-Man's" $71.4 in 2002.
'Pirates' box office bags Monday record
07/11/06A record-setting wind continued to fill the sails of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" on Monday, indicating the pic could show strong (sea) legs after its boffo bow. Disney's swashbuckling sequel grossed $18.1 million Monday, shattering the previous nonholiday Monday benchmark of $14.4 million set by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" last year.
'Pirates' adds more to treasure
07/10/06"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ended up breaking box office records by even more than initially thought, grossing $135.6 million for the weekend, $3.6 million more than the Mouse House's initial estimate and nearly $21 million more than the previous three-day weekend record set by "Spider-Man."
'Pirates' treasure tallies $132 mil
07/09/06You'd be hard pressed to find a record that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" didn't set. Disney's theme park sequel opened to an astounding $132 million -- a full $17 million ahead of the previous three-day weekend record set by "Spider-Man." It even beat the four-day weekend title previously held by "X-Men: the Last Stand," which took $122.9 million over the Memorial Day frame.
'Pirates' set to plunder
07/06/06With absolutely huge tracking numbers for Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" -- more than 50% of those polled in one survey said it's their first choice pic to see this weekend -- a monster opening is expected from the sequel when it bows today at an ultrawide 4,133 locations.
'Superman' rakes $74 mil
07/04/06"Superman Returns" is off to a strong start, albeit not as fast as a speeding bullet. Warner Bros. superhero tentpole grossed a solid $52.5 million on its opening weekend and $74 million over the five-day Fourth of July frame. Since its Wednesday opening, the Bryan Singer-helmed franchise restart has taken in $106 million. Though the Man of Steel dominated the frame, "The Devil Wears Prada" was the biggest surprise. Fox's chick lit adaptation proved very successful counterprogramming, grossing $27 million for the weekend and $39.6 million over five days -- far beyond expectations.
