As disturbing and densely beautiful as its opening image, a lofty forest that dwarfs the gangsters as they laugh over their kill.
Read the full reviewSubstance is here in spades, along with the twisted, brilliantly controlled style on which filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen made a name.
Read the full reviewIf, however, you're looking for compelling characters, all the lights are blazing here but nobody's at home.
Read the full reviewCrossing should be watched not because it's their finest achievement (that's still to come), but because the brothers are keeping things refreshingly different and building a career, their minds still very much fixed on originality.
Read the full reviewWhat it doesn't have is a narrative magnet to pull us through - a story line that makes us really care what happens, aside from the elegant but mechanical manipulations of the plot.
Read the full reviewWeightless. It is also, unfortunately, without much point at all... A movie of random effects and little accumulative impact.

A film noir ballad
"I cut my milk teeth on film noir and have a pretty good familiarity with the various ethnic gangsters and their effect on American society. I found this film absolutely fascinating. It captures the essence of the Irish and Italian mobsters , the essence of film noir (with many sly references: the omnipresent hat as leitmotif; the Dick Tracey silhouettes, etc.) The scene in which Leo (Finney, as always, is magnificent) fights off a hit squad while Danny Boy plays on is a gem. So is the Italian aria sung as the Italian boys look for a corpse. I found it an artistic masterpiece, much better than No Country for Old Men. I could analyze it in depth (after all, I majored in English at Columbia, but who would care? Great Job."
Itchy Capone Movie critic
"One of the Coen bros best. An off the wall gangster flic. Best ever performance of Gabriel Bryne . Perfect score makes this one of my favorites. Off the wall wit. Don"t miss it !!!"
