Critic Reviews

Rolling Stone | Peter Travers

Leatherheads is most on its game when it's in the game, and in the zone of Clooney's no-bull affection for the faces of his actors.

More amiable than witty and relying heavily on the likability and charm of its lead actors, Leatherheads scores more points as a retro romantic comedy than a football saga.

Clooney and Zellweger play off each other perfectly, delivering their dialogue with the rhythm of a well-choreographed dance and falling in love in the time-honored tradition of '40s romantic comedies.

Leatherheads proceeds agreeably, hitting occasional high notes when it isn't getting bogged down in forced slapstick hi-jinks.

Too much of Leatherheads feels like studied motions, and its charms never plaster over a story that takes forever to get going, and doesn't go too far once it does.

The film moves slowly and steadily, but it's never exactly dull, just mild.

Better than a finger in your eye. It's a perfectly passable, if instantly forgettable, date movie, lushly shot by Newton Thomas Sigel and with a script intelligently versed in American classics like "His Girl Friday" and "Hail the Conquering Hero."

There's a jaunty score by Randy Newman, and Clooney, as always, has charm to burn, but here, he's off his game.

Reproducing a period-piece screwball comedy for a modern audience turns out to be one playful, self-deprecating wink too many for the star, who also directed Leatherheads.

Arch and funny in equal measure, this looks like a theatrical non-starter that Clooney fans and football devotees might be tempted to check out down the line on DVD or on the tube.

It exudes goodwill and high spirits, occasionally makes you feel really good, and yet here and there and in some definite ways, it kinda sorta stinks.

Clooney, the film's director and star, can't make up his mind how to approach the story. One minute it's a romantic comedy. Then it switches to slapstick, then to screwball comedy before sliding into Frank Capra territory.

There's a flatness about the whole enterprise -- like drinking champagne, but from an old house slipper. Re: his performance, Clooney is terrific. His comparison to old movie stars is not just hype. He really does possess the combination of supreme confidence and humility that has been the hallmark of the biggest male Hollywood stars.

What is harder to comprehend is how Mr. Clooney turned out such a sloppy, haphazard and tonally incoherent piece of work. Leatherheads lurches hectically between Coen brothers-style pastiche and John Saylesian didacticism, while Mr. Clooney works his brow and his jaw and waits in vain for his charm to kick in and save the day.

Stunk. Horrid. Bad and do not waste your cash.

"Worst movie made in years. Clooney was horrible in this. He was a waiter before he made it big in Hollywood, so I guess that makes him a political genius. Anyway he's a good actor, but he was horrid in this."

Clooney is in love with himself

"Sorry, but this movie just bored me to death. I couldn't quite get what the big deal was with the mian plot. Zellweger ; way over acts and Clooney is practically kissing the lens. Sorry .... total bomb fest .. 1 out of 5 stars. thanks"

Decent, but could have been better

"Going in descending order -Great - Cinematography, music, John Krasinski playing a lovable sell-out (all those posters!)Good - George Clooney's Dodge is scruffy, funny, and amazingly enough, knows when to leave the party.Okay - Renee Zellweger, who was robbed of her Oscar for playing a 20's moll in CHICAGO, is frustrating because Leatherheads is set in the 20's and she is not delivering. There's no kick, no vinegar to her woman-in-a-man's-world reporter. And who dressed her? Aside from 2 hats, her wardrobe was at least 20 years ahead of the time.Annoying - the sepia pics bookcasing every other scene. The cop chase was not only filler, but boring filler. They could have at least speed-motioned it with tinkly piano music to get a laugh. Also, everybody seemed just out of reach of each other. The whole movie felt like George Clooney had a dream he made a football movie."

Eh...ok

"This movie was quite boring to me. I understood everything that was going on just fine, it was just an extremely slow moving storyline. Thats really the only thing I can say. It was good, and decent, but not the best movie i've ever seen."

"I go to the movies about 8 or 9 times a months this movie was a big disapointment, the kind of movie that makes you want to ask for your money back, dull, dull, dull."

Booooring!!!!!!

"A real snooze. Poorly acted. I left in the middle of the movie. I just could not take any more."

Not for young people

"In order to understand this movie you need to be a senior and have lived in the USA during the time period this movie was set in. Then you'll really enjoy it. For people under 50, most likely you just won't get it and the ideal viewer should be in the 60-90 year old range and be alert of mind. Then you'll really enjoy a flashback to earlier years. I would give this about 3 out of 4 stars as it wasn't perfect by any means."

"Leatherheads" Review by TAD

"The Movie was funny and good, but yet...i'm only 14. I understood what somethings in the movie were like speakeasies from history class, but overall, it was confusing to me."

Not Thrilled

"We were so looking forward to this movie, but I have to admit I was bored and fell asleep. It had a few cute moments, but on the whole, I wish I had my time and money back."
