Critic Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times | Roger Ebert

Better than "Gladiator" -- deeper, more thoughtful, more about human motivation and less about action.

Full of astonishments, not the least of which are its ideas.

Genuinely spectacular and historically quite respectable, Ridley Scott's latest epic is at its strongest in conveying the savagery spawned by fanaticism.

Los Angeles Times | Kenneth Turan

Scott and company have gotten so accomplished at re-creating history that the results have a welcome offhanded quality, making them spectacular without seeming to be showing off.

Fulfills the requirements of grand-scale moviemaking while serving as a timely reminder that in the conflict between Christianity and Islam it was the Christians who picked the first fight.

Odd as it is to say, Kingdom of Heaven loses its momentum the more Balian gets religion.

San Francisco Chronicle | Mick LaSalle

Screenwriter William Monahan has fashioned an intelligent and highly topical epic. Director Ridley Scott has brought it home with banners flying.

Massoud plays Saladin magnetically, and his arrival only illustrates how many opportunities Kingdom misses. Another, better movie would have made him the focus.

Entertainment Weekly | Owen Gleiberman

Scott, working from a script by William Monahan, is so busy balancing our sympathies, making sure no one gets offended, that he has made a pageant of war that would have gotten a thumbs-up from Eleanor Roosevelt.

Dramatically, even a persuasive supporting cast gets Heaven only so far.

Boston Globe | Ty Burr

A mostly lumbering, occasionally rousing epic that walks a bizarre line between historical fact and Hollywood wishful thinking.

Slate | David Edelstein

I'd have a lot more respect for Scott if he were actually the virtuoso he pretends to be. "Gladiator" had lousy, disjunctive action, and Kingdom of Heaven is even more maladroit.

The New York Times | Manohla Dargis

Scott's ravishing visual style, characterized by a fetishistic attention to surface detail and unrelenting beauty, can work wonders with big subjects, but this is also a director who needs actors powerful enough to shoulder narrative and emotional extremes.

Washington Post | Desson Thomson

To introduce an archetype like this to western audiences -- as the world weathers culturally and religiously demonizing times -- may have been worth this whole flawed movie. Too bad the story didn't just start with him.

This is all WRONG!

"The Pride Festival will be at the Boston City Hall Plaza in Government Center this year. Their will be NO events at the common and the parade route is ENTIRELY diffferent. Please view the official Pride web site at http://www.bostonpride.org/ Cheryl-Moving Violations Motorcycle Club The Biker Women Leading Pride since 1985!"

Rare: Arabs looking quite human and acceptable

"It doesn't surprise me that David Edlestein's criticism of KINGDON OF HEAVEN is more negative than most other critics. Like Charles Krauthammer, another "critic" of sorts, he knows that if Arabs are made to look human in popular films, the horrible ethnic cleansing which has been going on in Israel for over fifty years begins to look even more reprehensible. We can't have that, can we?A worthwhile, elegant and courageous epic about the horror of war driven by power-lust and religious madness. It brings to mind the current clash among fanatical Christians, Jews, and Muslims orchestrated primarily by the neoconservatives who are pulling King George's strings to the tune of thousands of casualties. The battle scenes were sometimes tiresome, but the story was clear and uncluttered."

Hurry Up, Please

"Normally, I love movies based on history, but this one about killed me. I can't tell you the number of times I almost fell asleep. By the end of it, I was just plain bored."

. Bloom sparks up the movie.

"Lovely, lovely, lovely movie. Good work from Orlando Bloom indeed. Not the best movie, but worth seeing. =] More for guys if anything, though."

husband enjoyed this movie

"I'm talking about a man who can't sit 30 minutes in a chair w/o having to get up. He never budged during this movie. Only 1 problem, I wasn't allowed to say anything. His comment was if I interrupted the movie, he would miss something. He really enjoyed this movie!"

This Movie Was Incredibly BAD!

"There were so many flaws in this movie I don't even know were to start. For me one of the worst things about this movie was the horrible croppiness that was used, it seemed like the movie was fast forwarding through some parts but on other parts it seemed like nothing was happening. But the thing that really made me mad was there was NO expanasoin of what happened to most of the cast at the end of the movie, did they just disapear or something, this movie had a horrible ending and simply ruined everthing! Also there were just so many things in the movie that were just down right stupid, when Orlando went to Jeruselum he descovers that there is no well were him and his people are, the people of his land must be very stupid not to dig a well previous to him coming there, that scene was just pointless! when there finally is a battle scene in the movie there were so many mistakes it was stupid, the opposing army was supposed to be throwing firey balls at the city wall however as the fire balls fell they exploded, I am not a history teacher but I wasn't aware that they had heavy artillary and bombs during the crusades! This movie was so dissapionting that it makes me sick. If you want to see a better action/warrior movie watch Troy it is much more entertaining and makes alot more sense!"

Action movie, not history

"You won't learn anything about the Crusades by seeing this movie. It's just an action show without even very good acting to redeem it."
