Critic Reviews
A fizzy and delirious high-camp message-movie musical that may just turn out to be the happiest movie of the summer.
Read the full reviewIf you look fast, you'll see Waters himself in a cameo (as a flasher; what else?), proof the new film is in touch with its dyed roots.
Read the full reviewIt's one of the best Broadway-tuner adaptations in recent years -- yes, arguably even better than those Oscar-winning ones.
Read the full reviewThe overall mood of Hairspray is so joyful, so full of unforced enthusiasm, that only the most ferocious cynic could resist it.
Read the full reviewWhat it offers isn't really a nostalgic look at a "more innocent time" so much as a saucy wink at a casually vicious time that is constantly being sold to us as innocent.
Read the full reviewIt seems inappropriate to call ick noir auteur Waters a breath of fresh air. But, amid the stale odor of our man-made, musty, Muzaked lives, he's a welcome gust of Renuzit.
Read the full reviewThe actors are best when they avoid exaggeration and remain weirdly sincere. That way, they do nothing to break the vibrant, even hallucinogenic spell of Mr. Waters's nostalgia.
Read the full reviewThe film isn't deep or thematically rich or filled with amazing characters. Instead, it's an excursion into song and dance, and works admirably on that level.
Read the full reviewJohn Travolta may stand out as a plus-size laundress who is hesitant, drab and retiring, but Hairspray is a consistently flashy, rousing and rambunctious movie spectacle.
Read the full reviewThough the film is too slick and heavy-handed in its pro-integration sloganeering, and it's burdened by Travolta's ill-conceived star turn, its infectious high spirits and catchy tunes still pack one hell of a sugar rush.
Read the full reviewBasically the movie is a bubble-headed series of teenage crises and crushes, alternating with historically accurate choreography of such forgotten dances as the Madison and the Roach.
Read the full reviewThis movie-turned-stage-show-turned-movie-again is intermittently tasty, if a little too frantically eager to please.
Read the full reviewWhen Hairspray is twisting and shouting and swiveling its hips, you can even dare to believe a great society is waiting in the wings.
Read the full reviewJohn Travolta takes on John Waters in Hairspray, and the result is anything but a drag in this appealingly goofy, all-singing, all-dancing screen adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the 1988 film.
Read the full reviewIn the musical numbers, where by rights Mr. Travolta should shine, he's almost out-danced and certainly out-charmed by Edna's better half, Wilbur (Christopher Walken), who is one of the movie's great assets, an oasis of calm amid the twisting and shouting.

NIKKI
"I LOVED NIKKI, SHE'S A GREAT ACTRESS, I SAW HER IN LIFETIMES QUEEN SIZED AND I FIND HER VERY ENTERTAINING."
Hairspray, Worth Entertaining
"I loved a few of the characters in Hairspray. I have to say Queen Latifah gave a warm, strong-willed performance, Michelle Phieffer was pretty top notch in her comeback turn as the villainess of this classic remake. Amanda Bynes was sweetly hilirious, Allison Janney was comical. Every movie scene was worth entertaining, not the greatest movie remake of 2008. but it was worth watching."

Hairspray is one of Hollywood's Greatest Musicals!!
"As a senior citizen, and longtime movie fan, I can tell you absolutely that this film is OUTSTANDING in every way!! It has been a long time since I have seen a film this entertaining or this well made. I have seen it at least ten times and everytime I see it, I like it better! All cast members were superb in their roles, especially Nikki Blonsky as the young girl. John Travola did an excellent job as well. The camera angles, the musical score, the colors, the lighting, everything is really great!! If I had my way, I would award this film an Academy Award as the best film this year, and certainly one of the best musicals ever made..and I have been a musical movie fan for over 50 years..This one really rocks!! Hats off to great entertainment!"
