Blood Diamond is a gem in a season with lots of worthy movies.
Read the full reviewFor its flaws, Blood Diamond is a gem, if only for being an unusually smart, engaged popcorn flick.
Read the full reviewIt's a solid performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, who has grown into this sort of "gritty" role and is more believable after having been seen dancing on the dark side in "The Departed."
Read the full reviewBlood Diamond attempts to be an action thriller with serious political overtones, to be as much position paper as "Zulu Dawn."
Read the full reviewTo the unlikely role of a Bogart-esque reluctant hero, Leonardo DiCaprio brings an intensity that compels even when the script falters.
Read the full reviewBlood Diamond is a by-the-numbers message picture, to be sure...But the director, Edward Zwick, is craftsman enough that the pace never slackens, the chase scenes thrill, and the battle scenes sicken. And if it makes viewers think twice about buying their sweethearts that hard-won hunk of ice for Christmas, so much the better.
Read the full reviewAs an entry in the advocacy-entertainment genre, in which glamorous movie stars bring our attention to the plight of the less fortunate, Blood Diamond is superior to 2003's ridiculous "Beyond Borders" while looking strident and obvious next to last year's "The Constant Gardener."
Read the full reviewThanks to the redundancy, though, Blood Diamond is dramatically diffuse, and at least 30 minutes too long. Thanks to Mr. DiCaprio's raffishly dashing soldier of fortune, the movie is worth watching all the same.
Read the full reviewAfrica's enduring sorrow is ripe for drama, but Blood Diamond is, finally, a fitting metaphor for the gems: Potentially brilliant from a distance, but upon closer inspection, one likely will see the flaws.
Read the full reviewThere is every reason to learn about the link between jewels and death, by all means, but no reason to try to disguise a term paper as entertainment.
Read the full reviewDiCaprio is terrific, but he can't save this lecture from the shame of using Africa as a vehicle for another white man's redemption.
Read the full reviewMuch like Zwick's "Glory" and "The Last Samurai," Blood Diamond strives to be an "important" film while stopping well short of being genuinely provocative and artistically chancy.
Read the full reviewWhile Mr. DiCaprio turns out to be an ideal fit for Blood Diamond, there's an insolvable disconnect between this serious story and the frivolous way it has been told. There is no reason to doubt the filmmakers' sincerity; only their filmmaking.
Read the full reviewDirector Edward Zwick tried to make a great movie, but somewhere in the process he forgot to make a good one.

Great Actors, Great Movie!!!
"I loved it. For me to cry, it had to be an excellent movie! It was. FIVE STARS"
Outstanding Acting regarding historically true situation
"Thank you for a most outstanding performance, Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou! I love this movie as it tells it like it is and was. The entire movie was well thought out. The music fits well with the scenes; the refugee scenes are highlighting an issue Americans continue to ignor; Leonardo does an outstanding job as a southern African;and, Djimon Hounsou drives home the importance of the African family.Jennifer Connelly portrays the independent American spirit which only a handful of female Americans have lived.-KarenDenver"
A Diamond in the Rough ^ Jameson Thottam ^
"Initial Impressions ^ JAMESON THOTTAM^Hmmm... Leonardo DiCaprio is a mercenary? I don't think that's gonna work. Well I was wrong. It does work, very well. ^ Jameson Thottam ^Blood Diamond is the latest venture by the master of politically correct movies, Edward Zwick. It is an action picture filled with brutaly realistic bloodshed, bone-jarring explosions, more gunplay then a Schwarzenegger film, and a potential romance with Jennifer Connely to boot. In other words, the perfect action movie. ^ Jameson Thottam ^Synopsis ^ JAMESON THOTTAM^DiCaprio plays Danny Archer, a South African diamond smuggler who has hit rock bottom. He is busted and sent to prison. In prison he meets Solomon Vandy (Djimon Honsou), a Mende fisherman who was forced to work in the diamond feilds. Apparently, Solomon found a pink diamond the size of the Ritz and hid it away from his captors. Archer bails out Solomon and assistis him in finding the diamond. It is not an easy journey. They are constantly pursued by a renegade colonel, a rebel general with whom Solomon holds a grudge, and the rebels. Along the way they meet Maddy Bowen (Connely) an American journalist who researching the conflict diamond trade. The story is compelling enough to make the viewer think, but is fast paced enough to keep you hooked. ^ Jameson Thottam ^Visually ^ JAMESON THOTTAM^Set in Sierra Leone at the height of the civil war, Blood Dimond is a work of amazingly orchestrated chaos. Zwick plunges us into one intense scene after another and never lets up. The violence is so brutal and realistic, you are not supposed to like it but man is it exciting to watch. The most memorable scene is whne Archer calls in an airstrick on the rebel base. It is intense. It is graphic, but it is great. ^ Jameson Thottam ^The Orchestrator ^ JAMESON THOTTAM^As he did with the Last Samurai and Glory, Zwick m"
INSPIRING
"I WAS MOVED TO TEARS AT SEVERAL POINTS IN THIS MOVIE NOT LEAST WHEN FATHER AND SON WERE FINALLY REUNITED ONLY FOR HIS SON WHO HAD BEEN BRAINWASHED BY FEAR AND CRUELTY OF THE REBELS TO YELL STRANGER. LEO WAS AMAZING IN RAPIDLY BECOMING A FAVE ACTOR FOR ME.ASTOUNDING THANKS YOU 5 STARS"
Please See This Movie
"This was an excellent movie, but that's beside the point. Most especially, it was an important movie. It shows us how our demand for African resources (oil, diamonds, etc.) contributes to the horrible bloodshed and poverty over there, and at the same time, demonstrates how lucky we are. Please go see this movie and take as many people with you as you can."
