Golden Globes Snubs and Surprises

    Movies: SURPRISE! Heath Ledger
OK, OK, so we're not completely shocked that Ledger received a posthumous nomination for his superbly deranged Joker in 'The Dark Knight.' But recognition for superhero movies is so rare, he just couldn't be considered a lock. We are relieved though -- imagine all the rioting in the streets of Gotham had he not been nominated. Oscar, take note.

    Warner Bros.

Movies: SNUB! 'Sex and the City'
The fact that the Globes honors comedies typically opens doors for fan favorites like 'Sex and the City.' Yet the HBO series-turned-screen sensation couldn't crack the Best Picture - Musical or Comedy list, where the summer's other big chick flick, 'Mamma Mia!,' stands as a favorite. Maybe they should've given Carrie and company a couple song-and-dance numbers.

    New Line

    TV: SNUB! 'Grey's Anatomy'
Code red! The series continues its slide off the hot list by coming up with a goose egg on Globes nominations this year. That coupled with the fact that a few members of the cast seem to want to jump ship (Katherine "I wasn't given good enough material" Heigl and her bff, T.R. Knight) could spell serious trouble for the intern program at Seattle Grace.

    ABC

    Movies: SURPRISE! Tom Cruise
Reason number one we love the Golden Globes: It recognizes the existence of comedy. Reason number two: Every once in a while, it'll completely shock us. See, for example, the nomination of Tom Cruise for his gut-busting cameo as a fat, bald, ruthless, f-bomb dropping studio executive named Les Grossman in 'Tropic Thunder.' Call it a comeback.

    WireImage

    Movies: SNUB! 'The Dark Knight'
It was the movie of the year -- and the second-highest grossing domestic release of all time. Yet a $996 million worldwide haul couldn't land Batman a slot on the Globes' crown list. Also left out of the party: director Christopher Nolan, himself a superhero to fanboys everywhere for resurrecting a franchise once thought dead.

    Warner Bros.

    TV: SURPRISE! Kiefer Sutherland
The '24' star has been showered with accolades before, but what's surprising this time is that he's nominated for best actor in a mini-series or made-for-TV movie for the 2-hour "special event" that was '24: Redemption.' When it comes to Kiefer, he deserves the love no matter how you slice it -- or categorize it.

    Fox

    Movies: SURPRISE! Miley Cyrus
No, she hasn't been nominated for Best Actress for 'Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds.' But she is in contention for Best Original Song (for 'I Thought I Lost You' in 'Bolt'), facing off against, amongst others, Bruce Springsteen (for 'The Wrestler'). That news is either like, so totally awesome, or just utterly depressing, depending on where you stand.

    AP

    Movies: SNUB! Clint Eastwood
Awards voters love Clint Eastwood. The four-time Oscar winner is 78, and just cranked out two award-friendly dramas in one year, 'Changeling' and 'Gran Torino.' He's declared 'Torino' his final acting performance, and has gotten sufficient buzz for the role of racist war vet. Swan song or no, the Globes didn't make Clint's day ... this time.

    Warner Bros.

    TV: SNUB! 'Lost'
After a series slump, things on the offbeat island got exciting again, reeling fans and critics back in. Looks like Jack, Kate, Sawyer and the rest of the survivors are going to have to work harder to win back the love of the Hollywood Foreign Press. Guess that whole "the island's gone" surprise ending didn't move HFPA members.

    ABC

Movies: SURPRISE! Meryl Streep (Two Nominations)
Meryl Streep could get an acting nomination for silently standing in place. So while it's no surprise that she is a Best Actress nominee -- in both categories, Drama for 'Doubt' and Musical/Comedy for 'Mamma Mia!' -- what's surprising is how disparate the roles are, as a cold-as-ice nun and free-spirited ABBA songbird. (Combine them and you've got 'Sister Act 3'!)

Which movie had thousands of fans standing in the rain screaming at each promo event? Which movie made so much money, the next two sequels are being filmed in March? Which two young stars got 10 million more each to film those sequels? Which movie sountrack is still in the top ten, as well as the score, the books, the movie companion, even? Which movie and it's stars has over 350 websites dedicated to it? Yeah, THAT movie. Wake up, Hollywood. We have spoken!

Tom Cruise and the Dark Knight??? Thats what you all are talking about? How about the Incredible Meryll Streep? Now thats acting at it's best. She could get an award for opening the envelope at the Globes. And really whats with all the comic book movies, is the NERD back in style?

Some of you must be confusing TC's personal life with his acting. He's one helluva actor: Taps, The Outsiders, Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, The Color of Money, Interview With the Vampire, and Rain Man; just to name a few. His resume not only has depth, but also diversity.

How about 'The Wire'? Does arguably the greatest show in American Television history being snubbed by your "Snubs and Surprises" piece count as a double snub? Where is the love for this amazing series? Really, calling inferior work like 'Grey's Anatomy' snubbed is a joke if you've ever seen even one episode from any season of "The Wire"

Yes, I agree Tom's a druggy, kick's the shit out his wife and kids and is the worst actor ever. Crap movies like Born On The Fourth July, Top Gun, Mission Impossible the Last Sumurai and that other crappy movie with Nickolson. You can't handle the truth. Collateral sucked to. A note to Tom, keep making those crappy movies, and loving your wife and kids so these morons can keep seeing them and then bitch.
