Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Atonement Over 'No Country for Old Men'
for Best Picture - Drama
Just when it seemed the Keira Knightley-James McAvoy weeper was losing steam heading toward Oscar nominations, it scored a coup by taking top honors at the Globes. The win is all the more rewarding considering the film beat out not only the heavily favored 'No Country,' but five other contenders as well.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
'Sweeney Todd' Over 'Juno'
for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy
Johnny Depp's bloody R-rated musical murdered the competition, beating out indie fan favorite 'Juno' (aka this year's 'Little Miss Sunshine') for the victory. The moral of the story: Never doubt a demon barber.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Julian Schnabel Over the Coens
for Best Director
The renowned artist-turned-filmmaker has earned nothing but kudos for his third film, but few expected him to compete with the likes of the Coen brothers and Ridley Scott in the Best Director race. Suddenly Schnabel -- and his devastating film 'Diving Bell and the Butterfly' -- are much more serious Oscar contenders.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
David Duchovny Over Alec Baldwin
for Best Actor - TV Musical or Comedy
'X-Files' vet Duchovny is still one of TV's most beloved actors, but his saucy Showtime series 'Californication' earned mixed reviews and pissed off the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Is Baldwin still being penalized for that whole "thoughtless little pig" heart-to-heart with his daughter?
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
The Coens Over Diablo Cody
for Best Screenplay
It seemed that 2008 might be the year that a former stripper won the Globe for best screenplay (finally!), but those pesky Coen brothers had to go and ruin it. Joel and Ethan's brutal, engrossing 'No Country for Old Men' beat out Cody's quirky, poignant 'Juno.'
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Samantha Morton Over Katherine Heigl
for Best Supporting Actress - TV
It's been Heigl's year -- a surprise Emmy win for 'Grey's,' a hit movie ('Knocked Up') and a real-life wedding. We fully expected her to add a Globes victory to her list of accomplishments. And to have Morton win for a serious, little-seen HBO drama? Izzy cried.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Jon Hamm Over Hugh Laurie
for Best Actor - TV Drama
Hugh Laurie, known to all as the brilliant, irascible Dr. House, had already won this trophy twice. Third time's the charm, right? Yet Jon Hamm, as the handsome yet enigmatic advertising exec Don Draper on 'Mad Men,' came seemingly out of nowhere to scoop up the Globe for a deserving underdog win.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Cate Blanchett Over Amy Ryan
for Best Supporting Actress - Movie
The relatively unknown Ryan ('Gone Baby Gone') has come out of nowhere (well, Boston) to win the vast majority of critics awards. But the fact that Blanchett was also up for Best Actress ('Elizabeth: The Golden Age') likely helped give her enough of a boost to dethrone the frontrunner.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Jeremy Piven Over Ted Danson
for Best Actor in a TV Drama
We've seen a softer side of Piven's Ari Gold this past season on 'Entourage.' While over on 'Damages,' Danson's been doing his most daring work ever, as billionaire Arthur Frobisher, who likes cocaine, hookers ... and winning. And we thought he would -- win, that is.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
Marion Cotillard Over Ellen Page
for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy
With 'Juno' scoring record profits for its distributor and Page fast becoming a household name, the young actress had to be considered the favorite here. But Cotillard's magnificent transformation into songstress Edith Piaf looks to have left the Hollywood Foreign Press Association singing.
Glenn Close over Edie Falco
for Best Actress - TV Drama
It was the Mob versus the law. Falco, the only nominee from 'The Sopranos' (in the show's final season, no less) was up against Close, as a shady attorney in the thriller 'Damages.' And we know that art doesn't always imitate life -- the law came out on top this time.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
'Extras' Over '30 Rock'
for Best TV Musical or Comedy
Were the Hollywood Foreign Press having a laugh? Sure, Ricky Gervais is a Globes fave since his brilliant Brit original 'The Office,' but we didn't expect his HBO series to beat out the red-hot '30 Rock,' especially since the NBC sitcom was coming off an Emmys win.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
'Mad Men' Over 'House'
for Best TV Drama
AMC's series about advertising execs is so good, it could've been the new 'Sopranos' ... if only HBO hadn't been dumb enough to pass on it. But we're just not used to the Globes rewarding little-seen, quality shows -- so even all five of us who actually WATCH the show thought the highly seen, yet still quality, 'House' would take home the Globe.
Golden Globes Surprise Winners
'Atonement' Over 'Into the Wild'
for Best Original Score
Two epic tales of loss faced off, and in the end it was Sean Penn's 'Into the Wild' that suffered another heartbreak. The unsettling typewriter-tapping tuneage that sets the foreboding tone for the 'Atonement' beat out the sweeping and equally tragic 'Wild' score.

and by "chateuse" I meant "chanteuse" which is french singer feminine in French. word.
This is to Mr. or mrs. squidsyd7, I could see where you are coming from, maybe a little bit, because they do have the power as a foreign organization. However, if you have yet to see "La Vie En Rose" then you are truly and undeniably missing out. Marion Cotillard is phenomenal. Exceptional. Transforming. She truly becomes and embodies the late great French chateuse, Edith Piaf. It was one of the greatest performces in modern film history, if I do say so myself. Secondly, it is simply too easy to call out the Golden Globes for favoring foreign films. It is ill-informed and a little bit judgemental. Take the Oscars for example. Plenty of Foreign Language films get nominated for Academy Awards including Best Actor/Female Actor, Best Cinematography, etc. etc.... not to mention, as one of the many examples, Roberto Benigni f-ing miraculous Best Actor victory for his role in Life is Beautiful... speaking Italitan. Dolce. What's beautiful about film is that it can operate and construct itself as a universal language, one that can connect with people and inspire them. Let's not forget how many American films went home--and most, rightfully so-- with sweet golden globe victories?
Um...hello? Don't you know why Ellen Page didn't win? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association picked! That means the foreign films won! Yes, Ellen Page should have won. But some woman nobody knows from "La Vie en Rose" won because it's a foreign film!
Wow...out of all the shockers...the most shocking for me was Katherine Heigl losing to whats her face? Katherine had a greeaaat year and is clearly a fan favorite, I LOOOOVE Knocked Up....I never seen or heard about that other chick and whatever show she is supposedly on...this is straight BS these awards...who does the selection process so I can write them...morons!
get off a movie website if you want people to be talking about war. movies are never as important as human life, but sometimes there is a time and place for certain discussions Don't be surprised if you walk into a toy store and see a barbie on the shelf. Go to a support group if you're looking for compassion, not an aol movie blog.
