In an uncommon move, the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated seven -- count 'em seven -- films for best picture (drama): <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/american-gangster/19137/main' target='blank'>'American Gangster,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/atonement/26636/main' target='blank'>'Atonement,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/eastern-promises/25300/main' target='blank'>'Eastern Promises,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/the-great-debaters/29834/main' target='blank'>'The Great Debaters,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/michael-clayton/27887/main' target='blank'>'Michael Clayton,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/no-country-for-old-men/25145/main' target='blank'>'No Country for Old Men' </a> and <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/there-will-be-blood/25014/main' target='blank'>'There Will Be Blood.' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/spider-man-3/18651/main' target='blank'>'Spider-Man 3'</a> was egregiously overlooked.

Though Crowe delivers two characteristically excellent performances in two highly acclaimed fall films (<a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/310-to-yuma-2007/25306/main' target='blank'>'3:10 to Yuma,' </a> <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/american-gangster/19137/main' target='blank'>'American Gangster'</a>), he's been spotted less and less on "buzz lists" as the weeks have passed, so a Globes snub is hardly shocking. But what happened? Are voters still sour over that little phone incident?

Though the film earned only modest box office returns, it was the feel-good indie hit of the summer -- and the former TV star garnered raves for her movie breakout role as a sad and lovely waitress who falls for her OB/GYN. We, in turn, fell for her ... and not just because she makes a darn good pie.

A year after his <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/the-last-king-of-scotland/26292/main' target='blank'>'Last King of Scotland'</a> performance was overshadowed by <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/forest-whitaker/116578/main' target='blank'>Forest Whitaker's</a> awards sweep, McAvoy is hanging with the big boys (Washington, Clooney, Day-Lewis) in the ultra-competitive best actor race. Of course he's not a household name just yet: That comes next March, when he headlines the highly anticipated actioner <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/wanted/28120/main' target='blank'>'Wanted'</a> with <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/angelina-jolie/36009/main' target='blank'>Angelina Jolie</a>.

The Hollywood Foreign Press was definitely not McLovin the vulgar, raucous and ingenious <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/superbad/26917/main' target='blank'>'Superbad.'</a> Despite stellar reviews and $121 million in box office, the booze-and-profanity-laced flick was shut out of all major categories. Somewhere, the entire cast is uttering profanities and tappin' a keg.

Was it just us who thought Travolta's turn as big-hearted momma Edna Turnblad was, maybe, the weak spot in an otherwise bright musical? But of course, the Golden Globes never met a man-in-drag performance they didn't nominate.

The buzz coming out of Sundance last January was that Cusack was almost certainly headed for his first Oscar nomination, especially with <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/grace-is-gone/25431/main' target='blank'>'Grace Is Gone'</a> snagging the Audience Award. But the film has met mixed reviews, leaving Cusack on the outside of the best actor bubble, looking in. Good thing he's got his glasses.

And the movie turned leading man <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/seth-rogen/297862/main' target='blank'>Seth Rogen</a> into a star, but he probably lost his ticket to the show to fellow Apatower <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/john-c-reilly/59476/main' target='blank'>John C. Now we do.

Everyone expected <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/ellen-page/360080/main ' target='blank'>Ellen Page</a> to get a best actress nomination for her heartfelt, hilarious, hyperliterate turn as a pregnant teen in <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/juno/24692/main' target='blank'>'Juno,'</a> but the film also snagged a nomination for best picture. That should solidify its rep as this year's <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/little-miss-sunshine/24997/main' target='blank'>'Little Miss Sunshine'</a> -- and do wonders for its Oscar chances.

Jones is one of those actors who's usually on nominee lists with any dramatic role he takes, so to see him missing from two categories (best actor for <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/in-the-valley-of-elah/27571/main' target='blank'>'In the Valley of Elah,</a> best supporting actor for <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/no-country-for-old-men/25145/main' target='blank'>'No Country for Old Men'</a>) is a real jolt.

<a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/philip-seymour-hoffman/32716/main' target='blank'>Philip Seymour Hoffman</a> got a best actor nod for <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/the-savages/25523/main' target='blank'>'The Savages,'</a> but no such luck for his on-screen baby sis, <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/laura-linney/42589/main' target='blank'>Laura Linney</a>. Despite a heartbreaking performance as a woman dealing with the deteriorating health of her estranged dad, Linney was coldly overlooked. Talk about savage.

The Best Drama category is overflowing with quality (seven noms instead of the usual five or six), but the fact that '3:10' isn't on the short list at all -- for Director (<a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/james-mangold/101021/main' target='blank'>James Mangold</a> ), Best Supporting (either Crowe or <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/christian-bale/3538/main' target='blank'>Christian Bale</a>, or <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/ben-foster/272673/main' target='blank'>Ben Foster,</a> who was getting lots of buzz) is a gol durn shame.

We're not shocked that Hoffman was nominated in two categories (best actor, <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/the-savages/25523/main'>'The Savages'</a>; best supporting, <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/charlie-wilsons-war/23212/main'>'Charlie Wilson's War'</a>) -- the man's an acting genius! -- the real stunner is that he didn't cancel himself out in the best supporting category, with his third stellar performance of the year, in <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/before-the-devil-knows-youre-dead/26631/main'>'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.'</a>

The reviews for <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/sean-penn/106027/main' target='blank'>Sean Penn's</a> adaptation of the best-selling novel haven't been universally spectacular, but the drama has held firm on awards prediction lists nonetheless. Most thought <a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/emile-hirsch/239003/main' target='blank'>Emile Hirsch</a> would be rewarded for his drastic physical transformation, but the future <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/speed-racer-2008/28066/main' target='blank'>'Speed Racer'</a> couldn't cut it in a highly crowded field.

Cheadle's fiery turn as Civil Rights-era radio host Ralph Waldo 'Petey' Greene earned nothing but raves when <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/talk-to-me-2007/26173/main' target='blank'>'Talk to Me'</a> opened, but the film's summer release and modest box office numbers didn't do him any favors. Of course if Petey were still alive, you could count on him blaming "The Man."

This was supposed to be Brolin's entree into awards-land respectability, and he would've deserved it for his portrayal of taciturn Texan Llewelyn Moss. Instead, he was one-upped by Chigurh (<a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/javier-bardem/3887/main' target='blank'>Javier Bardem</a>, who got a best supporting actor nod), in a case of life imitating art.
