Based on the popular syndicated comic strip, DreamWorks' latest animated adventure follows a rascally raccoon named RJ (Bruce Willis), who owes a huge debt to a thuggish bear (Nick Nolte) after trying to steal his food stash. With only one week to pay up, RJ stumbles upon a hyperactive squirrel (Steve Carell) and his circle of post-hibernation friends wondering what a mysterious "bush" is doing in the middle of their forest. RJ explains that over the hedge is a suburban development chock-full of food and proceeds to con the unsuspecting pals into swiping snacks that he plans to hand over to the bear. That is, until he starts feeling like part of the family. Here are three reasons to check the movie out:

What's in It for the Kids: There are furry woodland animals, including three videogame-loving porcupine kids; plenty of sight-gags (taken straight from the 'Ice Age' "Scrat" playbook) to keep 'em giggling; and even one of those catchy indie-lite soundtracks (in this case provided by Ben Folds) that's currently de rigueur in animated films.

What's in It for You: The cast is a who's who of comedy, and while the humor isn't on par with 'The Incredibles' or 'Shrek' (what is, really?), there are a few laugh-out-loud moments, mostly revolving around Steve Carell's Hammy who with just a few sips of a caffeinated energy drink can exist in hyper-speed. Allison Janney's uptight suburbanite is also good for a laugh, especially if she reminds you of the narcissistic, no-fun Debbie Downer in your neighborhood.

Redeeming Social Value: It's always helpful for kids to learn early that conning is not the ideal way to make lasting friendships. No one wants a selfish schemer for a kid. But the real message of the movie is that when you have a family (whether by blood or by choice), you can face adversity -- an empty food pile or, say, the impending wrath of a vengeful bear -- together.
